The Jatiya Party’s candidate Mr. Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa has defeated Awami League’s candidate Mr. Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu in the mayor election to Rangpur City.
Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa won 160,489 votes with the Jatiya Party symbol ‘plough’ in the election to the Rongpur city election on Thursday (21/12/2017).
His nearest tremulous candidate the Awami League’s candidate Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu , the outgoing mayor got 62,400 votes. Jhantu got 98,089 votes fewer than Mostafa. Mr. Kawsar Zaman Babla,The BNP’s candidate finished a distant third with 35,136 votes for ‘paddy sheaf’.
Returning Officer Subhash Chandra Sarker announced the results late in the night from the control room set up in the “Rangpur city Police Community Hall”. Besides the seven mayoral candidates, 211 candidates are compete for 33 posts of general ward Councillors while 65 candidates fought for posts of Councillors in 11 reserved wards.
The Rongpur city corporation has a total 393,894 voters. Male voters 196,256 and female voters are 197638.The voting ended at 4pm, with no reports of violence. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said at a news briefing in Dhaka that the commission was ‘satisfied’ as the voting was “festive & fairly” he said, voters praised the balloting as ‘peaceful’. The BNP Accused the two allies ‘engineered the election as part of a bigger conspiracy. But the Awami League expressed satisfaction. CEC said that BNP’s alleged about voting environment is baseless.
